dozens of cars were stuck in the mud. but fortunately that mud stopped short of going into any of the homes here. but what a sight homeowners woke up to this morning after that eight-inch city water main broke. it was a torrent of 40,000 gallons of water flowing down the hillside, picking up mud and debris and speed along the way. some residents said it sounded like a storm outside their windows. but when they looked out it was too dark to see what was really happening. but then many of them got knocks at the door from police, warning them to get out. >> i saw the police down here. and about 5:00, 4:30, we were here, and i could see the water coming down. and at 5:00, the police say that evacuate. the water is coming down fast. >> reporter: now, that resident did evacuate the scene, and he says this isn't the first time that he has had to do that. he had to do it in 1982 shortly

after he bought his house that is right next to today's  mudslide. you can see from our chopper overhead that there is still lots of cleanup. and even where it's been cleaned up, there is still evidence of the mudslide that came down below. now the city public works department says the engineers have tested that landslide, the side of the hillside. they say it is seismically secure, and there there is more rain in the forecast nor this weekend. in the long-term, lots of folks asking the same question you asked, raj, and that is what about this aging infrastructure. this was an eight-inch cast iron pipe that just snapped. there was nothing going on around it. so the question now is could this happen again? some folks saying about what the gas lines? could we see something like san bruno in the future? lots of questions in the days ahead, and hopefully lots of answers. reporting live in daly city, kris sanchez, nbc bay area. >> a lot of concerned residents.

thanks, kris. new at 5:00, a hunt for a pair of dangerous criminals in the east bay. walnut creek police want you to take a good look at the surveillance pictures. this is one of the suspects. police say he went by the name aubrey. he and a second man who went by the name david are accused of kidnapping and carjacking a 57-year-old woman as she left work last wednesday. investigators say the men tied her up, blindfolded her, and drove her to various places, trying to get money from atms. afterwards, they drev the woman to an isolated area in the oakland hills where they let her go. anyone with information is asked to call walnut creek police. we have new details in a story that has all the makings of a dateline nbc. where is john mcafee? they're urging him to come in for questioning to help solve the murder of his neighbor. the 57-year-old mcafee is considered a person of interest in the weekend shooting of gregory fall. this all happened in belize. mcafee told cnbc, quote, i've

been accused of something i didn't do. i am moving every four hours, and i'm fearful for my life. he claims when investigators arrived at his home, he hid in the sand with a cardboard box over his head. food fight over. workers at raleys and nob hill reached an agreement today. details of the deal won't be announced until it is voted on by the whole union, which should happen soon. health care benefits were at the center of the fight. about 40 stores in the bay area were affected by the flight. a san francisco man accused of violent sexual assaults was found guilty on 25 of 16 counts this afternoon. he now faces life in prison. frederick dozier was convicted of attacking three women along the 24th street corridor in the mission district between june and december of 2011 police say he grabbed the victims from behind and dragged them to secluded areas. dozier was arrested after police

matched him to dna from the crime scenes, including this surveillance video. the only count the jury did not convict him of was attempted murder. items described as having, quote, great historical importance were stolen overnight from the oakland museum. police say someone broke a door to get inside the museum and clearly had planned out which items to take. a guard saw the burglar in the act on a security camera and notified police. the thief apparently was a history buff, taking items from the historic displays and bypassing the arts and nature exhibits. police say items made of gold are also missing tonight. investigators are now reviewing surveillance video for clues on this suspect. to serve and protect. and on this rare occasion, to deliver a baby. never a dull moment for the oakland police. today three officers were reunited with the baby boy they helped deliver. last friday they were called into action at a gas station. a woman in labor and a baby that could not wait.

nbc bay area cheryl hurd joins us with this incredible story. how did it go today? >> reporter: it was fantastic. we had three young strong oakland officers here all on the verge of tears, really. it happened at the eastmont station in oakland. a reunion of sorts with the baby's mom kimberly, the dad, barry, and the baby of the hour, 4-day-old nolan shell miller. mom told us today that she told dad she was having contractions when he came home around 6:30 friday night. they jumped into the family car, heading to kaiser hospital. they made it only to 98 avenue near the 580 freeway when dad was told to pull over. it just so happened three police officers happened to be there, and they say today that that was a blessing. >> it doesn't usually happen like that for a lot of moms. mostly moms get the opportunity to go to the hospital and have

their baby in the comfort of a nice bed. but on that day, when she told us that she was having a baby, she was not lying. she was having a baby, right now. >> if it wasn't for god putting these three officers into place, no matter what they was doing, you know, these three guys is always going to be a blessing to me, no matter what happens, you know. you single-handedly, like i said, saved my son's life. for real. >> reporter: now baby nolan was named after the nearby zoo. the nolan zoo. and named middle name is shell, and that's after the shell gas station he was born in. the baby weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces. and right now he is an honorary oakland police officer. and mom, needless to say, she is doing fine. a little tired, but she is doing fine. reporting live in east oakland, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> great story. nolan shell hanging out in oakland now.

kelly, one of the women at the center of the petraeus career. now allen's nomination to be the nato chief of europe is on hold. allen claims the e-mails were mostly between his wife and kelly. kelly is the florida socialite who received threatening e-mails from paula broadwell. that led the fbi to discover that she and petraeus were having an affair. bay area pediatricians are send mortgage babies to the hospital with a potentially dangerous respiratory virus. marianne favro joins us to tell us why doctors are alarmed. >> reporter: they're concerned because they're seeing rsv much earlier than they expected. and they think that that may be a sign of a rough winter season. if you or i get the virus, we may feel like we have a cold. but in babies, it's much more serious. pediatricians throughout the bay area are sending more babies here to the hospital to help them fight respiratory virus, or rsv. the virus affects the lungs and

breathing passages, and hits premature babies the hardest. thinking causes a small infant to wheeze and have a lot of respiratory distress. because their air ways are so much smaller, when they get inflammation, they have a harder time. and they end up at a much higher rate of hospitalizations than the bigger kids. >> reporter: once this the hospital, young patients often receive ax general and nutrition through an iv line. doctor says rsv can be deadly in patients with congenital heart and lung problems. >> we in our practice have hospitalized two infants, normal full-term babies with rsv this win it. that's a little early and that's alarming. >> reporter: alarming because doctors usually don't see rsv hit until december and january. but there is a way to protect your baby. when megan was born prematurely, she weighed less than four pounds. she received a special shot to help prevent rsv. however, those shots can be costly. more than $500 for each one, and

not all insurance providers cover the expense. children under six months are most at risk. doctors say you can also protect your child by washing your hands thoroughly and minimizing your baby's exposure to other people. now here is why it's so important to know if rsv is in our community. doctor says typically we can expect a flu season to hit just a few weeks after we start to see rsv. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, marianne. new numbers out today show holiday travel will be busy on the road and in the air. aaa says nearly 44 million people plan on traveling this upcoming thanksgiving holiday with 90% hitting the roadways. it's about 1% more than last year, but it's the fourth consecutive year of increase. one reason, gas prices have been declining since september. and for those flying, ticket prices are also down, but so are the number of passengers. still, more than three million people are expected to fly. for crab lovers, happy new year.

the crab season begins thursday. now the big change this year, crab will cost you a bit more. here is the good news now. the bay area crab fishermen reached an agreement with fish processors. last year crab season was delayed, you might remember, until after thanksgiving because of a price dispute. but yesterday fishermen and processors settled on a wholesale price of $3 a pound. where does that rank? that's 75 cents more than last season. >> god willing, we should be able to fill all those crab orders for thanksgiving. it just will not be a cheap price this year. so everyone needs to, you know, expect a higher price. >> been warned. fishermen will begin setting their traps tomorrow with the first catch expected to hit the docks on thursday. >> that's a lot of work. training for a triathlon is a huge commitment. >> for moe athletes, it's about competing. for other triathlete, it's a totally different motivation. an east bay man with the unique

triathlons, sometimes as much as 16 hours a week, is one way jonathan has learned to control his. he has since successfully finished 11 triathlons, successfully transformed himself into a role model. >> if you try hard, you can actually overcome this condition, and you can prevent it overcoming you. >> reporter: still, jonathan has been urged to do more. and after completing this year's ironman uk, jonathan went in search of what that was. at the end of that search was a 6-year-old girl. >> just watch where you put your feet and always hold on with your hands. >> reporter: kylie espinosa is also a type 1 diabetic. jonathan, however, saw a way around it. he used sponsorship money used through his triathlons to give

of people who aren't happy about that. what some store employees are doing to fight the tide. and the boy scouts take a hit. why a major company is taking a stand against the group.

you can now add target and toys r us to the list of stores opening early. they're opening thanksgiving night. but some target employees aren't too thankful for that. they're protesting having to work on thanksgiving for what is supposed to be a friday event. an online petition already has around 200,000 signatures. this year many stores decided to open even earlier to generate more stores. target plans on opening its cars on the thanksgiving night at 9:00 p.m. shipping giant ups announced it will no longer give grants to the boy scouts of america because of the organization's exclusion of gays and lesbians. the announcement came after an online petition, protesting ups's annual grants to the boy scouts that petition gathered

80,000 signatures. ups says it will not give grants to any organization which discriminates on sexual orientation, race, religion or ethnicity. they gave $100,000 to the boy scouts in 2010. >> we'll be back in a moment.

fairfield police are searching for three men who robbed this jewelry store last friday. this is the surveillance video of the robbery. the suspects entered nandin jewelry store just after it opened, physically restrained two employees inside. police say the employees were held at gunpoint while the other gunmen, two men grabbed the jewelry from several display cases. neither of the employees thankfully were injured. now let's check in with jessica aguirre for a look at
